Alisha Taff is a first-generation farmer who owns and operates Just Jujubes, a 320-acre property in Santa Barbara County, where she grows a thriving jujube orchard and keeps bees for honey. As a Chinese American, she grew up eating jujubes and quickly learned to care for these extremely drought-tolerant trees when she acquired the property in 2014. As the business grew, Just Jujubes Products LLC, a separate entity from the ranch itself, was formed and is managed by Alisha to better facilitate and govern the sale of these products through Just Jujubes.
The Beginnings of Just Jujube
Just Jujubes is situated in the beautiful Cuyama Valley of California, which is inland from the Central Coast, not too far from Santa Maria or San Luis Obispo. I am its owner and Chief Farming Officer.
At the ranch, we use certified organic and regenerative methods that are certified by The Real Organic Project to grow jujubes, which we sell fresh in season and dried all year round. The dried jujubes are whole organic dried jujube fruit or organic jujube chips. They are sold in bulk and in attractively labeled small packages for consumer snacks. During the first few years, sales were made direct to consumers, grocery stores, markets and restaurants throughout Southern California.
The Path to Creating High-Quality Dried Fruit Products
With years of hands-on experience in food production, Just Jujubes has developed a deep understanding of what it takes to create high-quality dried fruit products that meet the expectations of today’s health-conscious consumers. Through years of trial and error, we discovered that natural sun and air drying directly on the trees produces the best quality, taste, and consistency for their organic jujubes. This traditional and natural approach has become a defining part of our process and product identity.
Demand for Healthy Snacks, Natural Ingredients and Innovation in Dried Fruits
The dried fruit market is currently being shaped by growing consumer demand for healthier snacks, natural ingredients, and transparency in food production. Consumers today are more informed than ever before. They are actively seeking organic fruit that is naturally dried and free from sulfites and artificial preservatives.
There is also increasing awareness that lowering production costs at the expense of quality can negatively impact long-term health and wellness. As a result, consumers are placing greater value on authenticity, nutrition and sustainable farming practices.
Balance Product Quality, Shelf-Life Requirements and Production Efficiency
As the business continues to grow, maintaining a balance between product quality, shelf life, and production efficiency remains a key priority.
Just Jujubes believes that efficient production begins with strong employee training processes and a commitment to maintaining product integrity. We also learned that reasonable shelf-life expectations, combined with careful production methods, help preserve both quality and operational efficiency. Rather than focusing solely on scaling production, we prioritize consistency and long-term customer trust.
Leadership Lessons for Building A Trusted Food Brand
Leadership has played an important role in building a successful and trusted food brand in a competitive market.

Our passion for cultivating organic, sun-dried jujubes has been the driving force behind the longevity and sustainability of our farm.
One of the most valuable lessons we learned is the importance of hiring employees who share the same values as the company and its consumers. Just Jujubes emphasizes building loyalty by treating employees like family and creating a culture rooted in strong organic and regenerative farming values. We also invest in our team by offering opportunities for outside education in marketing and business when needed.
In addition, Just Jujubes strengthens team relationships by providing employees, and sometimes even their families, with complementary products from the ranch. We believe in genuinely listening to employee suggestions and encouraging meaningful connections between team members and end consumers. These efforts have helped create a motivated workforce and a brand that consumers trust and respect.
